# 2: Did you know that in the Halo series there are Marines commonly referred to as “AWOL,” “Suicidal,” and “Paranoid”? These are NPCs that seem to display symptoms of mental illness and are unique in that you can kill them without any repercussion whatsoever. Why do these characters exist? Who decided to put them there?! These characters were DESIGNED this way. This is our starting point for a discussion about mental health representation in games and the intentions of designers who choose to address these topics.
